What We Are

Café Rhema is the perfect spot for studying, relaxing, or even a small business meeting. The café serves a variety of delicious coffee drinks, bubble tea, freshly baked goods, smoothies, and flavorful sandwiches. We’re open 7 days a week and offer daily specials which you can find on our Facebook page.

Cafe Rhema is part of the third wave movement of coffee. It’s an experience. It’s about increasing coffee quality, using more direct trade, greater emphasis on sustainability, lighter roast profiles and more innovative brewing methods. Coffee education also takes a significant role in our business model. We want to share the story behind the cup.

Originally established in 2005, Café Rhema was born Brown Sugar Café by a laid off auto worker with a dream of owning her own business. The former Economy Shoes building was the first building in the downtown area to be renovated, which kicked off the downtown Flint revitalization. Brown Sugar Café was taken over by local business owner and entrepreneur, Joshua Spencer, director of the non-profit organization Ichthus Flint and owner of the downtown Flint advertising agency, The Spencer Agency, in July 2013. With the name change came a dramatic transformation of the interior space which features a roaring 20’s Great Gatsby theme.

Rhema (ῥῆμα in Greek) literally means an “utterance” or “thing said” in Greek.`{`1`}` It is a word that signifies the action of conversation. In philosophy it was used by both Plato and Aristotle to refer to propositions or sentences. In this case, the name Café Rhema means a place where conversations start.

Who We Are

Josh

Founder/Partner

Josh cares most about Jesus, family and friends.  Spend just a moment in conversation, and Josh’s passion for Flint, the arts, and the craft of coffee are transparent.   He dabbled in many industries over the years, perhaps most recognized locally for his advertising career at The Spencer Agency. Josh spends his days away from Rhema as an advertising consultant, serving as director of Ichthus Ministries, and at The Freedom Center, in Fenton, with their ministry academy, coffee shop, and creative arts teams.

Tiff

Owner: Store Manager

Tiff is all heart, and has great passion for people, craft coffee and Jesus.  Her free time is spent with friends, and often incorporates one of the above, with her love of horror movies, video games, and great food. She fell in love with Flint after a brief missions trip, and moved here from Ohio to work with us, before later investing into the company.

Tiff has feels called to the less fortunate and helps run the Flint Community Cookouts to give back. She also attends and serves on the coffee ministry team at Freedom Center Church in Fenton.
